Been doing some testing to find the flow of pixels in portraits. Above are a few attempts to find vectors in pixels based on surrounding pixels. In video this is achieved by simple comparing current frames to previous frames then calculating the velocity of the different pixels. Here I want to find the general flow of pixels through the image. The goal is to then have particles stream through the image to generate a representation of the image, some type of generative stipple drawing.

My friend Kyle has a built an app the tweets every 140 charters he types twitter.com/keytweeter. I thought this was interesting so I built an app to pull his twitter down and visualize the most popular key. Unfortunately twitter only allows you to go 3200 tweets back via paging. So the picture about is Kyle’s last 3200 tweets. Looks like E is the popular letter. I could have just wikied it but this was much more fun.

I just ran the app on just numbers interesting results. Its very linear with zero being the most popular.

Finally got normals working for the height map. Brad helped me a ton with the math, thanks brad :). After making sure I had the right points its was pretty simple.

Here is an example to calculate normals for a grid in OpenFrameworks. Obviously this can be applied to any other language.

The image above we have four points on a plane. We need three of those points:

ofxVec3f p1(x1, y1, z1);
ofxVec3f p2(x2, y2, z2);
ofxVec3f p3(x3, y3, z3);

We now need a vector from p1 to p2 and p1 to p3.

ofxVec3f v1 = p1 - p2;
ofxVec3f v2 = p1 - p3;

Just made this little app for fun. Its a classic fun house mirror where it splits the video up into four squares. I wanted to try and make a way to post the images in realtime to a database from the app. I had a ton of trouble with embedding a java applet that uses video, applet signing argg. The applet also makes a ajax call to load the new photo you just made. The page is a bit buggy, but try it out. For the best results just download the app and make some fun psychedelic art hehe.

Check it out here

I built a simple little app for Ryan to build piles of particles with applied physics. After creating desired grouping he could then export a vector file for composting in a illustration. I started to play around with the app and bringing it into to Illustrator, this lead me to ExtendScript. This reminded me of scriptographer awhile back but way more stable. Basically with ExtendScript you have complete control of the abode Suite. I did some simple little test with the swatch pallet. I went through every item in the document an colored it based on the size using the swatches in my pallet. This was a ton of fun especially when using Kuler. My friend Drew is doing a ton of amazing work with ExtendScript and OF. He has some great tutorials on his site. Here are some of my outputs.
I was playing around with some AR markers the other day and came up with this idea. taking just a plain old vinyl record and attaching an AR marker to the label you can track the record in 3D space. The next question was, can you scratch the record? So by figuring out the velocity of the records rotation and applying it to the payback of the audio you can scratch. There is some digital noise that needs to bee worked out, but sounds pretty good. Its still really hard to scratch, it takes some practice but is super fun. The next step is to figure out some nice triggers for different modes. I like the idea of not needing a turntable but the actual spinning of the record helps with the scratching and playback. I made a couple modes, one where the record is paused and you can just scratch through the song. The other looks for zero velocity for x time and then continues on with the song. If there is velocity you then are scratching and the audio is affected. I think that this project has some legs can't wait to play more. more photos

I wanted to create a shape within the contour so I used delaunay triangulation. This returned all the triangles that build up the convex hull of the points. This was great but I only wanted the triangles inside the contour. Theo gave me a really great inside polygon test which solved this. I made sure that the center of each triangle was inside the contour. I think this will work if I create static shapes that build up the contour. Zach also had a great idea to check to see if the shape is inside the polygon. I could built a contact listener that checks to see if its inside and if so remove.

I used box2d to create a shape out of the contour of the body. There are still some some bugs that I’m trying to work out. Initially the shapes were only colliding with the interior of the contour but simple reversing the points solved that. Some shapes are still being push through but I think I have some ideas to solve this, maybe create fixed shapes inside the contour. Despite the somewhat slow playback of the video due to snapzpro the speed is great. More to come.

I’m working on a project were I load every image from my computer and average the pixels. I want to find the universal pixel and image of the computer. In my head I thought this would would be a very interesting set of colors. For instance if you were a photographer you would have a very beautiful array of color. But is you were an accountant your color array would be bland. In my first test I average all the pixels in iPhoto and blaaa, its brown, what a bummer, nothing pretty. I have some other ideas, hope I can find something interesting.

In the Lab we have some awesome turtles, Rock and Roll. Ryan built a new tank for them so they can swim and be free. We need to share this with the world, so we build a web cam.

Being the Lab that we are this can’t be any old web cam. So Ryan and I grabbed some motors and parts around the lab to built a completely controllable camera. Via the Arduino you can pan and tilt the camera. I used Quicktime Broadcaster which was super easy and free. I had it up and running in about 5 minutes. The only hard part was getting the signal to reach the outside world from inside a corporate network. The next step is to have an interface for the motors and camera for people to control via a web browser. I will post more when we have it online. Get ready for Rock and Roll.

Working on a project were I need to track people and their movements. The setting is outside in a very uncontrolled environment (the city). I posted a question on OF to see what people think, I got a ton of great feedback. Here is a video of some initial testing.

We ordered a bumble bee, which I think is the best solution but much harder to work with. I have some more research to do though.

ps: the gui is a new addon im working on download soon, or find it on the OF forum.

My good friend Josh Goldberg organized a great event this weekend. The name of the night was Cognitive Resonance, the venue was Monkey Town in Brooklyn. I performed with Dave Della Costa, he built his sound live using SuperCollider and I built and application coded with openFrameworks.

The app load a series of type images that I created. They are analyzed in realtime in order to fide the whole words and then each individual letter. I created many particle system that react to the each letter. I hope to work on the piece some more and do more of these events. Thanks Josh for getting this together, next stop Boston.

I want to get some feedback on how to do a proper and simple calabration for a multitouch system. I am going to try and walk you through the process and construction of the table. Here is the main setup for the table. For the most part the table is working check out latest video. The blobs are showing up and somewhat consistent. Better adjustment of IR would fix this.

This is what the projection looks like. The throw of the projection is much larger than the table top. This is where the problem I think starts. I need to align the physical touch points to the projected touch points.

To get the correct image to track I perform a warping technique. I drag the four points of a quad to the four corners of the table. This creates a 640 x 480 warped image where pixel 0,0 is the top left hand corner. I think that this works well and does the job for the most part. It is on the other hand the most processor intensive part of the application. The distortion of the image is not terrible. I have tried Stefanix’s checkerboard calibration but do not completely understand how it applies other than compensate for wide angle distortion in the camera.

More info in photo notes

So now that we have a corrected image to track I need to match the projection to the tabletop. We do a very simalar calibration, this does not feel correct but works. You drag the four points of a quad warping the openGL world to the table. This for the most part works but the distortion of the GL world is weird. There must be a better way to do this.

I have been looking into all the techniques done by other systems like TouchLib and Reactivision. Most are a four point or many point touch calibration system. I have not completely figured this out, this is where I ask for help. What is the best way to do this calibration and setup?

This a project that I have been working on for awhile now. Finally over vacation I made some good headway. Here it is, go make some “Paper” and see how creative you are.

Update:
Project makes it to PixelMakers

Concept:
IDEA:039 (Interactive Paper) is a collaborative art project. Through interaction with a camera the artist composes a designs in time lapse. The results are then uploaded to Flickr, creating a growing “piece of paper”.

Keep in mind this is new technology. Updates will arrive as the software develops. Uploading take some time, be patient. Hopefully Flash 8.5 and AS3 will fix this problem.

The Mobile Game Mosh was at Parsons this weekend. The competition was to make a multi-player or single player game for a mobile phone in 24 hours. We chose to make the multi-player game of course. After not sleeping a wink and running into crazy coding bugs, we came out with a awesome game. We won honorable mention for best concept and for best sound.

8am Still Coding…

Here is are game concept:
Gym Jungle is a multi-player mobile game played in conjunction with a large-scale, public digital gamespace. Players navigate to the top of a school gym ropes course on the larger screen by catching directional cues from dodge balls launched across each player’s handset.

Instructions given to player:
Catch the balls to plan your path. Three catches updates your location. Find the trophies for bonus points and reach the goal within your allotted (for example, 15) moves.

Additional gameplay information:
Before sending a command to the larger gameboard, the handset stores up a queue of three moves to perform in sequence. Players must catch the moves on their handset via the mini dodge ball game that then govern advantageous positioning/advancement on the large gameboard. Players must reach the top of the gameboard in a certain number of moves to receive points for that trial and are encouraged to pick up trophies along the way. Upon successful completion of a trial, the player is placed at the bottom of the map again, but the interaction on the handset increases in difficulty, i.e. the dodge balls fly faster and the number of allotted moves is decreased. Players compete against one another for points based on number of trials completed and trophies collected. The map remains static, so players may leave or enter the game at any time, competing most closely with those who joined the game within the same timeframe.

This is a project that I did for my Parsons application. The assignment was to use paper, photography or digital media to create a color collage representing an interior space where you spend most of your time. I chose my room; everything that is in color represents a part of me. I see “chickens” outside not the ordinary; I use my imagination. The concept is to show my process at one moment in time.

I took 12 photographs placing myself in the shoot at least twice. I did not use the Photo-merge in Photoshop; it does not work very well. I placed all the photos together and painted them onto each other. I lined up angles and objects as best as possible. The result is a very long photograph that starts and ends the same. Feel free to email me if you want to know more, or just post comments. see it
